Kinnaur's First Film Festival

Kinnaur proudly hosted its inaugural Environmental Film Festival on 3rd, 4th and 5th December 2023

Kinnaur proudly hosted its inaugural Environmental Film Festival on 3rd, 4th and 5th December 2023. For three enriching days, this festival served as a catalyst for vital discussions surrounding the ecological and environmental challenges faced by the Himalayan region. With an intent to tap the transformative power of cinema and create community engagements, we collaborated with Alt Eff as our screening partner and The Kamru Riverside Camps and Resort, and Nav Rang Yuva Mandal Khadra (Youth Club) as local venue partners to organize the event.

Igniting Dialogue and Insightful Discourse

Bringing together a diverse array of participants including students, farmers, activists, and individuals from all walks of life, the festival sparked crucial conversations. Through thought-provoking screenings and engaging discussions, attendees delved deep into the pressing issues including water scarcity in the Himalayas in the current climate crisis, waste management, deforestation and more.

A Platform for Local Talent

The festival provided a stage for local artists to showcase their talents and captivate audiences with their music and dance performances. Vloggers, storytellers and aspiring filmmakers also participated in discussions.

Fostering spaces

Kinnaur's landscape lacks the conventional cinema theatres found in urban centres. Through carefully picked documentaries and narrative films, the festival provided a window towards leveraging the universal appeal of films, reaching a wide audience and instigating meaningful reflections on the interconnectedness between human actions and the environment.

Looking Ahead

As we reflect on the success of this inaugural event, we eagerly anticipate the continued growth of environmental consciousness and collaborative action in Kinnaur. The overarching idea is to cultivate a culture of cinema and inspire and empower local filmmakers, fostering a vibrant community of storytellers who amplify local voices and perspectives through the art of cinema.
